Aconcagua 2011 [EN]
The 2011 Aconcagua Medical Research Expedition (Press release 12/16/2010)
On 02/09/2011, Iulian Sirbu and Marius Roca will attempt to climb the Aconcagua summit in order to conduct medical research on one another. The purpose of the expedition is to climb Aconcagua peak (22,840 ft), the highest in South America and second after Everest Summit amongst the Seven Summits. The two climbers will measure the effects of high altitude on the human body by recording vital signs. The gathered data will be analyzed by dr. Gabriel Panait, MD, specialist physician in sports medicine.
Iulian and Marius will be measuring, recording and analyzing medical data for the following (just a few of them):
- BP (blood pressure)
- HR (heart rate)
- SpO2
- Body temperature
- Breaths per minute
- Blood glucose
- Urinalysis
- State of onsciousness, orientation, balance and speech
In preparation for the climb, the two mountaineers will undergo a series of tests, which include: complete check-up, blood work, EKG, spirometry, etc.
About the climbers:
Iulian Sirbu, 29 year old RN and expedition leader: is an ex-smoker turned marathon runner. He enrolled in Pathos Mountain School from 2008-2009, participating in summer and winter hiking tours thought out the Carpathian Mountains in Romania.
Iulian’s mountain experience consists of the following summits: Moldoveanu Peak 2544m, Omu Peak 2505m and Mont Blanc 15,782 ft (4808 m) on the 4th of July, 2009. Iulian is currently preparing for and looking forward to the Aconcagua experience.
Iulian is currently deployed overseas, providing cleared medically local nationals to aid the US troops.
Marius Roca, 26 year old Physical Therapist and expedition assistant: is an ex-smoker as well who got into running. He also enrolled in Pathos Mountain School from 2008-2009, participating in summer and winter hiking tours thought-out the Carpathian Mountains in Romania.
Marius’s mountain experience consists of the following summits: Omu Peak 2505 m. Marius is currently looking forward to his first international experience and the challenges he will soon face on Aconcagua.
How you can help?
Both climbers are former smokers looking for sponsors that promote healthy lifestyles. The climbers are in need of funds to purchase medical equipment in order to gather and record their findings during their climb.
